Let’s talk about How to Sell in the DMs, also known as selling in a direct message or chat feature.

Everyone, and I mean EVERYONE, is preaching and teaching you how important it is to sell in the DMs on Instagram, Facebook, and anywhere there is a direct message feature

Maybe you have jumped on board, but you have had a less than stellar experience.

Everyone is preaching How to Sell in the DMs on Insta, Facebook (anywhere there is a direct message feature!) but they are telling you wrong. Learn tips you can use to sell in the DMs now!

Let me guess how things might be going.

You are starting a lot of DM conversations but: 

  • You find yourself constantly asking everyone you talk to, “So, what are your big goals this year?” and then immediately offering to help reach those goals, but no one wants you to help….
  • Most people leave you unread and never reply.
  • When people do reply, you can’t figure out how to move them from DMs to a client or sales call.
  • You have no idea what to say, so you immediately send them your pitch … which got you blocked.

Bottom line: You haven’t gotten a single client from the DMs even though they are allegedly a “gold mine.”  


Why Your DM Conversations Aren’t Converting

Can I tell you the honest truth about why it’s not working now? 

It’s because you’re doing it wrong. 

It’s not all your fault. You were probably taught wrong!

However, there is one VERY IMPORTANT piece of information that A LOT of people are missing….I know this because I made this same mistake when I first started trying to get leads in the DMs.

➡️➡️ You’re being a vulture and trying to sell to EVERY SINGLE PERSON you are talking to just because they liked your post, commented on it, or started following you. 

Here is the truth. Unless it’s a post that literally says, “Comment if you want to buy my product/work with me/chat live!”…. Then it is super annoying to message someone and start trying to sell.

Think about it – would YOU buy from someone who came knocking on your front door after you liked the inspiring quote they posted on Instagram or Facebook? 

Ugh, no, you would probably call the cops. 

You need to LEAD WITH VALUE, build a relationship with them through engagement, and LET GO OF THE OUTCOME of getting the sale.

Remember, you are talking to a REAL HUMAN, and it’s essential to build a REAL relationship with them. 

A friend of mine once commented to me, “Honestly, pull at my heartstrings a little. Ask about my life or business, then maybe I would be interested in hearing what you have to say!” 

Give your audience answers to their questions, provide them valuable insights that can help solve problems so they start to TRUST you can actually help them. 

Sometimes, it is a long game, but I promise you it is worth it.

Let me be clear.

 I am NOT saying never sell in the DMs. After all, you are running a business! 

So if it’s the right time to lead into an offer, then go for it. But stop trying to make every single conversation about selling. 


Tips to Sell in the DMs

Just because you may have face-palmed through a lot of conversations until now doesn’t mean you can’t start turning DMs into dollars!

Here are some essential tips when it comes to selling in the DMs: 

  • Define Your Ideal Client and start engaging with their posts, stories, etc. so that it is a natural transition to the DMs
  • Ask questions to get to know someone and also to qualify if someone would be a good fit to work with you 
  • Ask for permission prior to providing additional information on your offer/offering a sales call
  • Pre-qualify people before you start chatting in the DMs
  • Make it easy for your ideal clients to message YOU, by using clear and concise CTA’s.
